The division of Spanish Studies offers a major and a minor in Spanish. Approximately 800 students take Spanish undergraduate courses every semester at Villanova. The Program is rigorous and students are encouraged to spend summers and semesters abroad in Spain and Central and South America, to obtain a greater proficiency level in the language.

Student Organizations
*Spanish Honor Society - Sigma Delta Pi
*Spanish Club - Hispanic Society of Villanova

The Division of Spanish demonstrates its commitment to superior undergraduate teaching by training the professors with the latest teaching methodologies and technologies available, and by coordinating all language courses: syllabus, exams and textbooks. Two Coordinators of Language Teaching and Testing work to enhance the quality and instruction of undergraduate language studies in the Department. A number of literature and cultural studies courses in Spanish are offered every semester to advanced students so that they gain an in-depth knowledge of the different Hispanic cultures.

There is a tutoring center, where students taking Spanish can obtain, free of charge, help with their class assignments and writing compositions.  Please visit our Language Lab for audio files and web resources.

The Value of Knowing Spanish

Knowing Spanish will open up new perspectives, will help us penetrate into other cultures and will give us a completely different outlook on our own. We all know someone who speaks Spanish, either because it is their native language or because they have studied it in school or abroad. Spanish has become so prevalent in the US that it is considered the 4th largest Spanish speaking country in the world. According to the Census, there are 41.3 million Hispanics in the US. By 2050, they project this number to be 102.6 million, which will then represent 24% of the total US population.

For careers in government, health care, education, art, and for travel purposes, knowing Spanish will put you in great advantage. The number of students who choose to study Spanish beyond the requirement has grown dramatically in the last decade.
